I’m a photographic artist based in the United Kingdom, currently pursuing an MA in Fine Art at Aberystwyth University. Before this, I worked in research and development in the biotech industry, a background that helps informs my analytical and experimental approach to art.
My work stems from a desire to explore urban and rural environments, and a deep curiosity about the world. With my camera, I strive to document honest moments that reveal the connections between people, nature, and their environments. These observations are often spontaneous, capturing emotions and stories as they unfold.
Much of my work is intuitive, guided by what scenes capture my eye and the emotions I feel when taking them. This process allows me to connect deeply with the scenes I photograph and reflect on why they captivate him. My current practice, developed as part of my MA, is focusing on both urban and rural settings. In urban environments, I’m aiming to document the ways people interact with their surroundings, capturing their activities and behaviours within these spaces. In rural landscapes, I continue to photograph scenes that trigger my curiosity, using the process to better understand my own instincts and creative choices. Across both, I’m not trying to create ‘pretty pictures’ but to present images that resonate emotionally and invite quiet contemplation.
My work is influenced by David Ulrich’s book, Zen Camera, which describes the use of photography to deepen one’s knowledge of themselves. The book recommends daily practices in photography, meditation and self-reflection which complements my own spiritual journey, which is inspired by the teachings of Eckhardt Tolle, Jiddu Krishnamurti and David R Hawkins. Ulrich’s practices allow me to connect deeper with my surroundings and improve self-knowledge by reflecting on the images I create.
I work with both digital and analogue mediums, alternating between a Canon DSLR and a Pentax LX 35mm camera. Developing my own film and printing my images are a significant part of my creative practice, as it fosters a hands-on connection with my art. This tactile process is highly important to understand the true meaning of my work.
